Travel Tips for The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan

Activities

There are plenty of activities at the Grand Hotel for adults, children, and families.  Our travel tips:

1)  As soon as you have checked in, walk up the stairs next to the registration desk, to the Parlor level.  Directly in front of you will be the Information Desk.  Pick up a Daily Schedule of Events, and review what is left for the day.  During the remainder of your stay, a Schedule of Events for the following day will be placed on your bed each evening during the evening turndown service.

2)  The Grand Hotel shows movies each evening in the Heritage Hall on the first floor.  We highly recommend "Ice Bridge."  This documentary chronicles the winter season for Mackinac Island, when the straits freeze over and the locals can travel across the ice to the mainland.

3)  Bob Tagatz, the hotel's historian, presents lectures on the hotel's history that are not to be missed.  You can find out the day and time of Bob's next lecture at the Information Desk on the Parlor level.

4)  Complimentary demitasse is offered in the parlor each evening from 8:00 - 9:30pm, following dinner.  This is a very nice way to relax and wind down.

5)  Walk the grounds and enjoy the landscaping and scenery.

6)  Even if you bypass many of the other activities, you must sit on one of the rocking chairs on the front porch, which is billed as "the longest porch in the world."  Enjoy a tradition stretching back to the hotel's opening in 1887.

7)  Visit the cupola -- go to the west side of the parlor level, just past the piano.  Take the elevator to the fourth floor, then walk up two flights of stairs.  The cupola has 180 degree views of the hotel grounds and the island.  Our photos that look like aerial shots of the pool area were taken from the cupola.

8)  Rent a bicycle and explore the roads and trails located behind the hotel.  Download a map here.  Note:  remember the hotel is located on a bluff -- if you ride your bicycle down the hill to the shopping area, you will then need to come back up the hill.

9)  Depending upon your sporting preference, play a round of golf, swim in the Esther Willams pool, or enjoy a round of tennis.

10)  Visit the Grand Hotel's website and check out all of the activities.
