Travel Tips for Vermont Lodging and Restaurants

Lodging
Lodging in Vermont is probably going to be more expensive than you would have thought.  And the bad news is there are very few chain hotels/motels in the tourist areas.  But there are ways to save money without sacrificing your comfort or the enjoyment of your trip.

First, be sure to review our Hotel Tips -- these tips can help you find a discounted room.  In addition, be sure to check the websites of the inns or B&B's you are interested in.  We booked a $314 room at the Equinox in Manchester for only $137 by searching through their website, and locating an almost hidden pull-down menu that listed rates far below their "best available rate."

Our hotel recommendation for the Manchester, Vermont area would be the Equinox.  It's over 200 years old (parts of it, anyway) and is a very nice place to stay.  The staff is attentive and cordial, the concierge is good, the rooms are nice and comfortable, and the location is good, within an easy walk to a several good restaurants (including Mulligan's, which we recommend).  We stayed there in the winter, and we were given snowshoes to use for the day.  Be aware of the $25 per day "resort fee" which includes free coffee, complimentary use of their snowshoes, and complimentary valet parking.  One of the staff can give you directions to the lake secluded trails that are just down the road from the Equinox.  Overall this is a nice place to stay, but don't be fooled by the "Resort" in their title, as it's not.  For example, their rooms are missing some of the amenities usually found in upscale hotels and resorts, such as cotton balls, Q tips, and (yes) shower caps.  They do, however, have robes.

Restaurants in Vermont
There are many good places to eat throughout the state.  We suggest you consider the following:

  1. The Marsh Tavern -- located in the Equinox in Manchester, this was the tavern where Ethan Allen and the "Green Mountain Boys" would gather during the Revolutionary War.  Lots of ambiance, and good food.  Travel Tip -- in the winter, try to be seated in the room with the fireplace.

  2. Ye Olde Tavern -- Manchester -- arrive before 6:00pm and you can order their Early Bird Special, with cranberry fritters, salad, entree, desert, and coffee or tea for one fixed price of $15.00.  We dined on the pot roast and turkey, and both were excellent.  This is a nice, cozy restaurant with good food and good service.
